Since PSE 2021 has been out for quite a while, I suspect there will be no updates to your 2018 or 2020 versions of PSEįor the Z fc. Historically, when new versions of Photoshop Elements are released, older versions are no longer updated with new cameras. I can save Zfc RAW images for a later date when it is easier to post process these. I cannot view the RAW files so I can view the jpeg files to see which images I want to invest more time in with the DNG converter. Aha, I can hear CHG_CANON's voice in my ear say something like "why shoot jpeg and RAW?" Well now I know. Meantime my workflow is to load jpeg and RAW files onto my tower unit and then copy the RAW files onto my laptop (PSE 2020 w/ DNG converter), process the files I want and copy them back to the tower on which I do most of editing and storage. I'll certainly keep working at this one as well. BTW the DNG converter did not download on my computer with PSE 2018 on it. I will continue to fumble around with it. It's not intuitive and when I select what I think is a tutorial or guide, the picture does not respond. In the meantime I downloaded Adobe's DNG converter and have begun trying to use it. There may be an upgrade price or a sale price early next year, but this is all pure speculation.Īmfoto1, Thank you for such a comprehensive reply. The downside is that this isn't yet available, there's no way of knowing exactly when it will come available and it will probably be "full price" for the first few months at least. If needed for any reason, the 2022 version should be "update-able" at least through Fall of 2022, when the next version is announced (assuming Adobe follows their usual game plan). While there's no guarantee when it will be released, for a number of years Adobe has released the newest version of Elements sometime between late Sept. Wait until September or October to get the very latest version of Elements. But new cameras released in 6 months or a year or later probably won't be compatible with Elements 2021, perhaps if you update from the D850 to a newer model in the not-too-distant future.Ĥ. This won't stop it from working fine with cameras that exist now and it might even be possible to update a little more. Downside is that this version of Elements will also be closing out soon. If you instead buy it from another source, what they offer to download might have a 1 or 2 generation older version of ACR and need to be updated. If you buy direct as a download from Adobe, it will probably come with the latest ACR installed. Depending upon where you get it, that may need to be updated to the latest ACR 13.4. On the downside, there have been some documented cases where other software doesn't play well with DNG files (a key reason to not ditch your original NEF files).ģ. On the plus side, DNG files eliminate the need for Adobe's "sidecar" files they use with other RAW formats. Once you have DNG copies of the files, those will be backward compatible with your older versions of software. You use it to convert the NEF files to Adobe's DNG "Digital Negatives", which they promote as a universal standard (I still recommend you keep your original RAW files, in case you need them sometime in the future). Download Adobes DNG RAW file converter (assuming it's already been updated to work with Zfc files). The downside is that you don't have the flexibility for adjustments with 8-bit JPEGs, that you do with 14-bit RAW files (interpolated as 16-bit by the software.)Ģ. Either version of the software can handle those. Working with the D850's NEF files requires ACR 9.12.1 or higher, which both Elements 20 can handle.ġ. These are sufficient to work with your D850's RAW files because that camera is several years old now. The reason it's "grayed out" in your copy of the software is because it's already got the most recent (12.0) version it can use installed. I believe version 12.0 of Adobe Camera RAW (ACR) is the highest version Elements 2020 can be updated to use. You need a software with Adobe RAW 13.4, which was just released and only works with Elements 2021 (and will probably be included in Elements 2022 when that's released in a couple months). Neither Elements 2018 nor Elements 2020 can be updated sufficiently to work directly with the new Zfc's RAW files (NEF). PS: the update choice in PSE 2020 is "greyed out" (non functional) which I take to mean none available at this date.I encountered a problem with both PSE programs bei. I checked RAW files from my D850 (also recent purchase) and had no problem opening these. I updated the software and the list of approved cameras included the Zfc, yet PSE would not open the RAW files. I have both installed on two separate computers. I encountered a problem with both PSE programs being unable to open RAW files from my Nikon Zfc camera.
